Sure, thin filters are cheap to buy (or some companies give them to you 'free' with maintenance), but they can cost thousands in the long run in repairs because they don't filter out particulant matter which clogs your coils and runs your compressor too hard over the long haul.  Even worse, low quality filters let many allergens pass through the system directly to the air you breathe. Yuck!

And true, buying those fancy thick "baking soda" filters catch a lot of dust, but they are too thick and thus, restrict air flow which could inhibit your a/c system's proper function.  More money doesnt mean better quality!
